The 2000 Mississippi Legislature enacted the “Mississippi Mortgage Consumer Protection Act” on July 1, 2000. This act requires all companies, in state and out of state, who engage in the residential mortgage business in Mississippi to be licensed. The act provides for examinations to govern the residential lending activities of originators, brokers, and lenders. The Department of Banking and Consumer Finance began the process of licensing these companies in August 2000. Information concerning licensed mortgage companies may be obtained from the web site or from Traci McCain, Director, Mortgage Division, at (601) 359-1031 or (800) 844-24992 .
