The Division of Banking regulates Rhode Island Mortgage Lenders, Rhode Island Mortgage Brokers, Small Loan Lenders, Electronic Money Transferors, Check Cashers, Sellers of Checks, Foreign Exchange Companies, and Debt Poolers. The Division licenses approximately 1,200 of the aforementioned entities. Rhode Island’s licensee list is available for $15.00 from the Division and may be obtained by calling (401) 222-2405. This list is also available at the Department of Business Regulation Website at www.dbr.state.ri.us.
Rhode Island’s licensing statute for lenders was originally enacted in 1956. The loan broker statute was enacted in 1989. Both were last recodified in 19952.
